Stuff We Like – Yoink – A Killer New Startup
Introducing ‘Stuff We Like’ – a series of posts in which we the kids from Electric Firefly share titbits of information that we happen to stumble upon whether it be via RSS feeds, Facebook, Twitter, emails or hastily scrawled notes on the back of cocktail napkins.
Previously we have posted about how you can responsibly get rid of old, outdated or broken electronics but what about all the other stuff that still works perfectly (or reasonably) well? Introducing Yoink, a new Australian startup that sneakily launched just prior to Christmas. Yoink provides users with a way to giveaway those no longer needed items that are gathering dust and taking up valuable space, while being able to receive items you need yourself and that others are willing to part with. You’ll also be doing your bit for the environment by recycling and reusing items that would in most cases be destined to end up in landfill.
To quote their mission statement found on their Facebook page:
- Get free stuff from your local area
- Give away things you don’t need
- Repeat
Confused? Perhaps try looking at it as similar to eBay, however in this case no money changes hands and there’s no auction – it’s first in, best dressed. The site is well designed and simple to use – essentially being divided into three sections - “Find”, “Get” and “Give”. An interactive google map is also provided allowing users to quickly and easily see bounty can be found in locations near you.
According to their Twitter account, the plan is to kick off a PR campaign and officially launch the site this month so you should expect to see a lot more free stuff popping up in the near future. An iPhone app has also been submitted and is awaiting approval so keep an eye on the iTunes App Store over the next few weeks.
If any of you have used Yoink or a similar type service in the past, we’d be interested to hear about it in the comments section below. Go on, don’t be shy now.
