Tropfest Canberra 2010 Goes Green

It's like watching TV, but outdoors!

This coming Sunday will see Tropfest, the annual short film event taking over Stage88 in Commonwealth Park Canberra. On the off chance you hadn’t caught one of our numerous press conferences or received a media release, Electric Firefly will be making the incredibly boring drive down from Sydney to light up our market stall with the complete range of Electric Firefly lamps and lights.

But wait! There’s more! In collaboration with event organisers Tom-Tom Events, Electric Firefly is proud to be spreading the love by way of lighting up the VIP and sponsor areas. For those of you that didn’t receive your invitation to either of the aforementioned events, don’t despair – we’ll be recording the event for prosperity by way of taking several hundred photos, the best of which we’ll share with you.

Just when you thought the whole affair couldn’t get any more impressive,  it turns out that Tropfest Canberrra has gone totally green! How so you ask?

  • The Big Screens are being connected and powered by GreenChoice renewable energy which will supply all power needs for the duration of the event.
  • Attendees are being requested to step up their personal responsibility by bringing their own water bottles. The SES will be providing a tanker  of fresh water which for a once-only gold-coin donation, bottles can be re-filled from.
  • The Waste Busters – students from the Orana School’s River Health and Stars of Hope programs will be volunteering at the newly established Waste Sorting Station advising punters where to dispose of their various types of rubbish – into compost, recycling and rubbish meaning that it all won’t end up in landfill.
  • All food and refreshment vendors are being required to use only biodegradable packaging and utensils with emphasis on the use of locally sourced organic and fair-trade produce wherever possible.
  • To minimise the use of printed paper, the Tropfest program can be downloaded from the ACT Government Event’s website.
  • Punters are being encouraged to use public transport, cycle, walk or car-pool and to bring  their own reusable rubbish bags to take their rubbish home to be disposed of appropriately.

So, if you do decide to soak up some local homegrown culture this Sunday, keep an eye out for us and asuming that neither Simon or myself look too ludicrously busy / stresssed / anxious / inebriated, feel free to stop by and say hello.
